Get F*cked Sundays: The Media

August 15, 2010

Dear The Media,

You’re fucking kidding me, right?  Barack Obama comes out and does a commendable thing, walking into a firestorm fueled by fear, hatred, ignorance and xenophobia and reminds the citizens of the United States of America exactly what their constitution protects and that these “patriots” are railing against the very thing they claim to protect.

One day later, after severe backlash, he has to “clarify” his statements, stating that he was not commenting on “the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there”.  Well, aside from the fact that it is EXACTLY what he should have been doing, reminding the 70% of Americans (according to a CNN poll) who oppose the building of a mosque (SEE: cultural center) two blocks from Ground Zero that Islam is a religion of 1.57 BILLION FUCKING PEOPLE and that you cannot judge roughly 23% of the world’s population on the actions of 19 people who claim to worship the same god.  Really, you don’t want to get into that game.  I don’t see any of you up in arms over plans to build Catholic Churches in neighbourhoods with children, and I haven’t done the math, but I’d wager that children are at greater risk to being molested (SEE: fucked)  than any of us do becoming the victims of America’s Next Top Martyr.

So, you focus on the “controversial statements” made by President Obama, but you let a fucking GEM like this slide:

But New York Republican congressman Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, condemned the proposed mosque and the president’s comments. He said the mosque would be a symbol of Muslim “triumphalism” and that building it near the site of the 9/11 attacks “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust museum”.

From The Guardian

Really.  So the President of the United States comes out and states that people’s irrational fear of an entire group of people (because let’s be real for a second here, folks, this isn’t entirely about the cultural center’s [not actually a mosque, surprisingly!  Media, you did it again!] proximity to the site of the World Trade Center, there are protests around the country against plans to build mosques) does not overrule the rights and freedoms of said people and THAT is controversial?  How about equating the religion of 1.57 billion people to the Third Reich?  The deaths of 3,000 people in a terror attack to the systematic genocide of 6 million?  No?

Alright then.  Please, I hope you take this advice to heart: Get fucked.
