Crush Buildings Article in The Ottawa Citizen!

May 20, 2010

One more day until the “Things Luminous” release party at Zaphods!

Ottawa folks, make sure to check out today’s Ottawa Citizen for a write-up about the show, the band, and a tidbit about Rifle Eyes by the ever-wonderful Fateema Sayani!

A bedroom band blossoms

When Crush Buildings started six years ago, the band was a duo and their goal was to make music inspired by the lyrical style and musical technique of hip-hop.

As they progressed, Eimhin (pronounced “Evan”) Rooney and James Romanuk started picking away at hip hop’s conventions and adding dreamy indie rock to the mix.

Along with new styles came new band members. And what began as a computer-and-keys bedroom band has blossomed into a five-piece that artfully combines multiple musical styles.

Rooney and Romanuk remain the songwriting core. On stage, they are the programmers and samplers, while instrumentation is the task of Mike Steenbakkers (drums), Luke Duross (also of the band Relief Maps on bass) and Daniel Hay (of Amos the Transparent on guitar). Romanuk sings.

The group dynamics play out over a handful of tracks on the band’s third release Things Luminous, to be released at Zaphod’s tomorrow. The EP follows the 2008 LP Surrender Sleep and their 2004 debut EP Small Room Sessions. On each album, Crush Buildings progress on their breezy techno tunes. Romanuk’s haunting, uneasy vocal lines amp up the late-night mood of the music.

Hoping to draw out the likeminded, the band recently hung out their Rifle Eyes banner. The collective brings together acts such as Corboe, Danny Deleto and Kwiz Massturrz.

– Crush Buildings, Paramedics, Fri., May 21, Zaphod’s, 27 York St., 9 p.m., $7.
