Talkies Ruined My Life In The Pictures

May 19, 2010

On June 13, 2009, Kwiz Massturrz released their debut LP “Talkies Ruined My Life In The Pictures”.  The title is a reference to Mary Pickford, a Canadian-born silent film star who was known as “America’s Sweetheart”.  Her career met a sudden end with the advent of “talkies”, sound film.

The Mary Pickford reference was inspired by the street which Owel Five and KWES grew up on, Pickford Drive, and where James Hancock lived during the final stages of the album’s recording and mixing.  Ten tracks deep, the album itself plays out like a film score, showcasing James Hancock’s cinematic, lush production and Owel and KWES’ poetic wordplay firmly grounded in hip hop sensibilities.

…with everyone and their mom putting on some tight jeans & big tongued nikes to try and get their indie crossover-electro rap on, I have to respect anyone who makes the kind of hip hop they are passionate about.
